This is close to the SE Shallows thermal vent. More was added after this shot, including a second moonpool. This was my first base (run #1) before the renovation and expansionĪnd this was the main base from the first run. If you do build with a view to thermal, be aware that there are power relays that can be built, so the base can be quite some distance from the actual vent. I try to choose a spot not near any stalkers or gasopods. I also built here in the second run, but then disassembled it to rebuild in the pink cave shown in the second shot. A nice location with deep water access for late game. Or to the SE where the Grassy Plateau, Kelp Forest and Shallows meet is another (with thermal vent) This was the spot where I built my second and main base in the first run. To the northwest there are nice cliffs beside the mushroom forest, with a thermal vent nearby. You can use solar now, and add thermal later to support all of the whizbangs your base will have.Ī good view is paramount for me. If you plan to build a single base, consider building near a thermal vent. Eventually you'll want to build a moonpool, and having it over a bit of water is good. I tend to look for some sort of shelf with deeper water next to it. Any deeper though and you'll need a different power type, and since those blueprints probably haven't been located yet, the shallows makes sense. As long as you stay in the shallows anywhere is fine, as you can easily get solar power. First one directly below it, and the second about 50 yards away. In both of my playthroughs, I built the first base close to the pod. It's a mechanic to introduce you to various biomes, so new places to see, new creatures and most importantly, new resources! Might gain a blueprint or two along the way. Even with 135s of breathing, wrecks are complex enough that going without spares risks dying.Yes, investigating the other lifepods is a good idea. Wrecks need 1 or maybe 2 spare tanks and 6 empty inventory slots for swapping.

And if I want more speed, I use the Seaglide.ĮDIT: I've since started a new game in the current Experimental and I've up to Battery Charger, MPR, Water Filtration Plants, and Seamoth. Similarly, I end up using the Swim Charge Fins over the Ultra Glide Fins as having Battery recharge either with or without the Seaglide is rather powerful. And the Ultra HC Tank only has 110s and 20s isn't worth the greater drag.

Then when the Modification Station is available, upgrade to the Lightweight HC Oxygen Tank as it is also 90s but drags less. It's irritating that you can't see the oxygen in a tank by mouse-hover.

As well, no more than 1 or 2 spare tanks are needed, but will have to swap between the inventory and paperdoll both before the swimout to be sure the tanks are full, as well as during the swimout as soon as Oxygen is under 45s. As soon as a bit of Silver is found, fabricate the High Capacity Oxygen Tank to go from 30s to 90s per tank.

I've not played a game from start since this came in, but I can see how I think gameplay will change. However, the oxygen tanks are radically changed in Experimental and all this is now different, as I detailed here:

Back when I was playing with the oxygen tank system currently in Stable, I rarely used the Lightweight HC Tank as having more oxygen (60s instead of 30s) was more important.
